About FMGE/MCI

Foreign Medical Graduate Examination (Also known as MCI screening) is an exam for medical graduates who have completed their medical degree from a foreign country. It is conducted by NBE (National Board of examination) in India. The Medical students who have completed MBBS Abroad from countries like China, Russia, the Philippines, Kyrgyzstan, Nepal, Bangladesh, UK, US, and other foreign countries must have a clear FMGE Exam to start practicing medicine in India.

Why is the FMGE test required for medical Graduates?

FMGE was introduced in 2002. Earlier it was compulsory only for those who have completed MBBS from Abroad but later it became mandatory for all medical graduates. Now, the situation is, whether you have done your MBBS from India or Abroad, it is mandatory to clear the MCI screening test/FMGE Exam to validate a medical degree.

Eligibility criteria

Nationality: Candidate must be an Indian citizen or an OCI Cardholder (Overseas Citizen of India)

Qualification: Candidate must have completed primary medical education which is equivalent to MBBS from the country where university or college is located. The university must be approved by WHO and MCI (Medical Council of India)

Documents: The candidates are required to submit the proof of their primary medical qualification mandatorily. If a medical graduate fails to submit the proof within the defined time frame will not be allowed to appear for the examination.

Exempted countries: Candidates who have completed their primary medical qualification from the countries (UK, USA, Australia, New Zealand, or Canada) will not have to appear in MCI screening or FMGE exam because the universities of these countries are approved by MCI.

Exam Pattern for FMGE
All medical graduates are required to secure at least 150 marks out of 300, which means a candidate needs to score 50% marks in the exam. The passing percentage of the FMGE exam for 2020 was 9.94%. Other details about the exam pattern are tabulated below:
